| Steve was born in Cranbrook British
Columbia on May 9th 1965. His family moved to Nepean Ontario
during his youth and there he began his young hockey career.
Steve played junior hockey for the Peterborough Petes before
being drafted 1st round (4th overall) by the Detroit Red Wings.
At the age of 21, Steve became the youngest
captain in Detroit history under the coaching of Jacques
Demers. Since then, Steve has appeared in 11 All-Star games,
and has 3 Stanley Cups to add to his Lester B. Pearson,
Conn Smythe, and Selke trophies as well as an Olympic Gold
medal during the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympic games.
Steve and his wife reside in suburban Detroit with their
three daughters. Steve enjoys golf, fine wine, and traveling
with his family during the summer months. Steve has a local
hockey arena named in his honour in Nepean Ontario. He is
also very active in the Make-A-Wish foundation and serves
as the Red Wings' All-Star Kids' Captain, a collection of
players around the NHL committed to assisting children stricken
with cancer at local children's hospitals.
